Mai-Otome Episode 20

Japanese Title: ニーナと呼ばないで (NI–NA to Yobanaide)
English Translation: Don’t Call Me Niina

So Arika came to her senses after getting “counseled” by Mashiro/threatened to be melted alive, Argos called it quits in his alliance with Aswad, Tomoe and her posse went Erstin on their school, and Nina still couldn’t get rid of her daddy-con. To be honest, I don’t have as much to comment on this week compared to the others, probably because most of what I wanted to remark on has already been said in the previous entry. Nothing new then... Imho, I find the pace rather slow in terms of plot development except for the last part. To think by this stage, HiMEs would have started killing each other, Takumi as well as Akira got screwed real good, and Mai went so insane she fried nearly the whole Fuuka forest. AND it gets nastier from there. I know I shouldn’t compare Otome to HiME but I still can’t help feeling the former is slowly losing the momentum it has been building on since Episode 17. Well, I guess the good thing is that more of our questions surrounding various events were answered. A little revelation is necessary; otherwise this would have gotten no where at all. In addition, I really like the positive expansion on Mashiro’s character. She has grown so much in these past few episodes and it was definitely a pleasant treat to see her being this levelheaded in any situation. Usually, it’s Arika who’s calm in a serious pinch but in her confused state of mind, Mashiro made the wise decision of taking charge of the mess they were in, so mad props to her. Now, moving on...

This is the reason why Haruka is one of my favorite characters of the Mai franchize... Time and time again, she effortlessly proves herself to be so damn hilarious! Undoubtedly entertaining... I mean, just watching her LHAO at Natsuki’s predicament is enough to make me demand 100 rounds of “This Week’s Armitage” XD. Top class voice acting from Yuzuki Ryoka. Yukino’s “You’ll die if you laugh that hard” comment was equally amusing as well. Guess she realized the danger of having the Otome-Aruji relationship. If Haruka goes, she goes too and laughing to death is certainly not the most dignified way of dying for the both of them :p. Leaving that aside, I must commend Natsuki’s maturity in dealing with her humiliation. If she were her HiME self, she would have exploded in one of her usual tantrums, but she swallowed it and composed herself very appropriately. Nothing less from the revered Gakuenchou of Garderobe. She did look adorable when she was shaking in embarrassment and annoyance though. ^^

This is where the title comes in, although it’s kind of less significant than originally meant. Nina’s attitude here is a tad bit strange... “Please don’t call me Nina anymore”? If Sergay doesn’t call her “Nina” then how else is he supposed to address her? By her Meister title perhaps? Or maybe she wants him to stop using that affectionate tone when he calls her name... Nevertheless, it’s pretty clear she’s pining for her father to treat her more like an adult and her response is obviously triggered by Sergay’s “kawaii musume” comment. Despite the grounded front she had against Sergay, it’s evident her internal conflicts are tearing her from inside out. She still seems to harbor genuine romantic feelings for him, consequently wanting him to stop regarding her as a child and to start looking at her as an independent woman. Sergay’s opinion on all of this is unclear. He looks as if he’s gradually distancing himself from Nina, and trying to reach her heart at the same time. Hope he succeeds in doing the latter. He and Arika are the only two who are capable of guiding Nina back on track.

No, Kal-El wasn’t in that capsule

And what do we have here? It looks like one of the capsules that was in Rena and the maids’ possession during the invasion of Windbloom. And so, the mystery is partially solved (Actually it was rather obvious earlier on, but now we have solid evidence). Nina is confirmed to be one of the two babies sent drifting down the river. Now the biggest question is Nina’s true identity. Who is she really? Some have speculated she’s Rena’s daughter due to her flashback scene when she was drowning in the pool in Episode 6. A few others think she’s the missing princess since it was hinted she’s familiar with the castle’s surroundings (Pst... Nostalgia :p), although being the king’s Otome’s daughter does not make a difference anyway because they had to live in the castle. However, the princess is claimed to hold the Souten no Seigyoku, current candidate – Arika Yumemiya. How much can we trust that old woman’s words? Is it possible for the GEM to have switched owners over the past years? Why did the Shikkoku no Kongouseki, a legendary GEM unexpectedly react to Nina’s feelings? Was it because she’s in the same boat as Arika, having an Otome as a mother and inheriting the nano-machines during pregnancy?

You know, I don’t really mind Tomoe getting it down with Shizuru..... *Slaps herself* Oh HECK, yeah I do!! For the love of all things fluffy!! WTH?! Damn you Sunrise :p!! I’m sure the whole legion of Shiz&Nat fans all over the world would be after the writers’ heads. Seriously, what friggin’ stunt are they trying to pull here?! Have they been competing in smoke-a-thon when they came up with this?! Pft... Okay, that was my initial reaction upon witnessing the whole thing (in horror). Now after thinking about it thoroughly (and calmly), I’ve begun to have my own interpretation about what is really transpiring behind the scenes. Oddly, I’m even beginning to feel more relieved that Shizuru didn’t downright reject Tomoe despite how bizarre the circumstances are (Don’t get me wrong, I’m still a die-hard Shiz&Nat fan and I will always be). I may be mistaken (which I am most of the time), but I think Shizuru has a plan in mind. She’s undeniably a very intelligent woman, to the point of being extremely dangerous when the need calls for it. She may be well aware of Tomoe’s attraction to her early on, which is probably why she didn’t respond in a shocked manner when Tomoe made the move on her. Apart from that, Shizuru also knows what Tomoe has gotten herself into by agreeing to an allegiance with Artai. Perhaps she takes it as a precaution not to provoke the younger girl in any way, which may be the reason why she didn’t refuse her. Instead, Shizuru resorted to act indifferently towards Tomoe’s advances although she’s plainly not happy about this one bit. She also possibly sees the situation as an advantage, most likely indicated by her looking away when Tomoe kissed her (albeit it didn’t look as though it was a proper liplock ;p). By playing along, she’s able to subtly manipulate Tomoe into spilling important info, persuade her to accomplish certain tasks, or simply divert her attention. Speaking of which, I find Tomoe’s character to be rather inconsistent, if not poorly developed. She underwent quite a dynamic change in terms of personality over a short period, even though she didn’t get much screen time. Not too long ago, she was acting like a typically flustered teenage girl who would hesitate on her choice of words and shyly watch her crush from afar, and the next thing you know... She’s boldly making out with Shizuru without a hint of reluctance. Wha ^^;;;? Additionally, the brief shot of Natsuki gazing upwards before that scenario was worth noting. It seems the writers are trying to imply something about her relationship with Shizuru. *Sigh* I feel so sorry for our dear Gakuenchou..... I want COMPENSATION for this, dammit!! Sunrise had better come up with some Shiz&Nat love love service later on. And make it steamy!!
PS. Mind you that I still like Tomoe despite this retarded setup. She’s hawt when she’s evil. ^^

Harmonium Trio completed

Well, another mystery solved. Nina is the third chosen one to use the Harmonium (Like duh~ We didn’t see that one coming :p). Three roles filled and possibly confirmed. Arika has been tagged as the “Protector” by Sergay and Schwarz, whereas Mashiro the “Song” by Nagi, so that leaves Nina as the “Player”. Sounds about right but I’m not too quick to fully accept it yet because the three of them have been predictably identified as so due to the various characteristics they possess and the circumstances which are linked to them. Furthermore, there is a possibility of them sharing common roles, which means one or two of the other roles may be attributes belonging to objects instead of a person, for instance the “protector’s charm” being the two legendary GEMs. For now, I’m mostly sticking with Schwarz’s ideas but I still have my own little doubts. Of course the more noteworthy question in our minds now is who is Mikoto? She looks like the Harmonium’s guardian and from Episode 21’s preview, we can see that she’s able to fully materialize into a physical being. What would she do from here on after the confrontation with Nina? Is she the key to Mai’s return? .....Hey, where the heck is Mai anyway?

Next episode still seems to be at a moderate pace with perhaps a little action courtesy of Mikoto and Nina. Arika may be facing an adversary as well, although it’s ambiguous as to what is really happening. Midori and Mashiro have finally agreed to a truce and this could be the suggestion of a huge battle against Nagi and Schwarz very soon. Maybe in one or two eps time...

haha I have been waiting for your review of this episode. Sorry about last time. I did not know where else to express my feeling after watching this episode >.<

Erk O.O

Is it just me or does Shizuru's face looks bigger than Tomoe? Does difference in age is a factor here or is Tomoe a petite?

No, Kal-El wasn’t in that capsule haha you got the point!
But hell yeah, what is the significant of the capsule in there? Sunrise is so good at throwing a lot of questions and answer us later with suprises. It's just part of their game play.
BTW judging from Nina's hair color, it would be possible for her to be Rena's daughter. Well not exactly the same hair color but looks kinda similar.

Don't you think Shizuru is totally pwned here usually it was the oyher way round :P

I wonder what would happen if Natsuki were to die at the hands of Tomoe? Would the viewers get a taste of pysco Shizuru again? OMG, that would be insane, but hopefully that won't be the case. If my favorite character were to die, I would kill something (or send frightening/threatening letters to Sunrise for a reset). XD

Where is Mai? There's 6 more eps left to go. I doubt her return will have a positive or significant impact. There's just not enough time... There wasn't even any indications of what her role is going to be.

Leave it to Sunrise to mess with ShizNat fans..

@ Paeh
LOL no worries about it. We need to rant sometimes, no? It's fun! ;)

Yeah, Tomoe is a minor! Hahaha. XD
Maybe that's why her face is slightly smaller than Shizuru's, although... There's something else I noticed when I compared Shizuru's eyes during that moment and a few seconds before. Did her eyes suddenly get bigger? :p

Hmm... At this point, we still do not know what the significance of the capsule is. Perhaps, it could be... You know... Only a capsule ^^. But I think Nina was placed in it before, when she was still a baby. That's what I reckoned coz there were two babies who were put into capsules, and one of those capsules was at the location where Nina was when she was a child.

Nina as Rena's daughter? The possibility is there. One thing is strongly hinted in this episode - Nina has lived in the castle before. As whose daughter? We're also not certain... The confusing suggestion Sunrise is trying to tease us with is that Rena is Arika's mother because her grandmother claimed so. She told Arika her mother was an Otome and the person which immediately came to my mind was Rena. On the contrary, several speculations I could come up with which disprove this are 1) The queen was a former Otome before she married the king; 2) The old woman who told Sergay that Arika was the princess was really speaking the truth presuming she knows which daughter is whose, and the Souten no Seigyoku did not switch owners over the years; 3) Arika never had a biological grandmother who was still alive to begin with. The elderly woman who picked up Arika from the river may know Rena personally and told Arika (as she was growing up) that Rena is her mother just because Arika has the Souten no Seigyoku with her without any proper knowledge of her background.

Nah... Shizuru did not get pwned. Like what most fans would say... Shizuru got Shizuru'ed. ;p

@ Problematic
Natsuki dies? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! That would be SO wrong! T_________T
Yeah, if that were to happen *Prays that it never will*, there is absolutely no doubt Shizuru will go psycho. Most likely far worse than before. Man... If that death happens, I would actually wish for a reset too and I don't care a damn at how cheesy and lame it would turn out to be.

I fully agree with you. Mai is supposedly the most anticipated character to return to this series. Her comeback is delayed for far too long, so much so that it lessens the excitement in some ways. There is no time to expand her role properly. What I assume is that all she does is make a grand entrance, kick some @$$, and then her part ends there. I hope she does show up eventually, the sooner the better. Hopefully within the next two eps max.

Yeah, screw Sunrise for messing around Shiz&Nat fans. They sure know how to provoke us. :p

Eheh..Tomoe went Erstin .. ah, I liked that one..
I will not comment what she actually did to Shizuru (although I have the slight ^^; impression that the authors use Mai Otome to a sort of "make up" for what happened in Hime.. and I don´t only mean what is shown in this episode).
What is intriguing me is: why did Tomoe say that Natsuki also got captured? Was she hoping to get Shizuru that under pressure to €%§*ä with her? Or else, would have Shizuru let her make if she had known the truth? How does Tomoe know that Natsuki is that important to our graceful Amethist?Does she really know?
...mmmmmh....^~^
Speaking of the COMPENSATION to this disaster.. I have the weird theory in my mind (but it could be that is only wishful thinking), that this was a clever trick to get this eternal teasing about shiznats even more stingy.. and that they will show us our favourite couple coming (FINALLY!!!)together in a very sweet and passionate way --> the exact opposite of what happened between S&T. AND that Tomoe will find out (this is SO going to happen that I shouldn´t even bother to write it here)giving us more heartbreaking action like "you f**king b!tch, you slept with me, I thought you loved me!" and so on and so on.
This way the authors would get two pigeons with one stone..
AND I guess this would be also the only way to not get their studios KIYOHIMEZED by the Shiznats fandom..

Choux said...

@ philk
"KIYOHIMEZED"
LOL I love how fans are inventing new verbs due to the series' fandom. Brilliant. XD

"why did Tomoe say that Natsuki also got captured?"
That is a deep question... Yes, I suppose she lied to Shizuru about Natsuki as a way to pressure her into certain situations, although one thing may be taken as a hint. As far as things go, I assume Tomoe is aware that Shizuru is obviously worried about Natsuki, but possibly more from a professional point of view rather than romantic. It seems the only love rival she sees is Arika, and I somewhat doubt she suspects Shizuru is actually in love with Natsuki and not the former. On the other hand, I also assume Tomoe is very smart herself and she may be able to deduce things on her own, which she probably will at some point. She will come to realize that Natsuki means far more than a colleague to Shizuru. All we need now is for the latter to drop the hint right in front of her face once the time is right.

"Tomoe will find out giving us more heartbreaking action"
Mwehehe... Can't wait to see the look on her face once that happens. :p

@ Mentar
"If anything, I'd say that this episode sealed that Otome will end with a _requited_ Shizuru/Natsuki couple."
That will definitely be a dream come true. No matter how lame the series may get at the end, I'm all for an excellent rating once they confirmed a canon coupling between them. ^^

"2:1 that Natsuki will openly accept Shizuru's feelings in the last Otome episode. Any takers? ;)"
H3ll YEAH!! Count me in!!

Anonymous said...

I totally agree with Mentar.

Sunrise put an obstacle between them.
The fact that they have to struggle for their relationship, confirms the fact that they will have one.

The question is now, how will they come together?

eheh.. ..hentai thoughts.. eheh.. O.O

Choux said...

Gawd, don’t get me started otherwise I’ll have to mop up the bloody mess in my room *Plugs nose with tissue* :p

I agree with Mentar as well. By portraying Tomoe as a hindrance in Shizuru and Natsuki’s relationship, the situation makes it more believable and of course, interesting like the circumstances they went through in HiME. One could say it gives their relationship more depth and dimension. I’m grateful that Sunrise took the official poll results into consideration and made the effort of listing Shizuru and Natsuki as two of Otome’s main characters. The only thing we can hope for now is that they won’t screw up at the end.

Sorry about the late respone...I've been hiding. XD

That's so weird...Sunrise has been very inconsistent lately. Why may you ask? They keep on reusing certain things to portray a certain plot like the Jabal thingy. Also in Mai Hime, someone was going to go green sparkly after every ep or two.

Yet how come there hasn't been any deaths as of late? I was expecting a casualty each week. Something big is going to occur especially with the lack of action. It's likely that during the next two eps or so something unlikely will occur. It seems 21 wasn't that great either... I'm scared...Sunrise will pull something out of their asses and screw us over.

Choux said...

LOL I was wondering where you were. :p

Er... There was a plot issue with the Jabal thingy? Um... I'm confused. Maybe I missed something. Sorry for being vague. ^^;

Yeah, I guess so... Like you said, deaths seem to occur in a more consistent pattern in HiME, with one or more for almost every episode. In Otome, there has only been two so far. Two important characters, that is. Who knows, maybe Sunrise is gonna do a mass homocide later on. Gek... As long as they don't kill Shiz & Nat..... Well, it seems things are starting to look up based on Episode 22's preview. I can't wait for next Thursday. ^^

Anonymous said...

Sorry I meant they kept on using Jabal to convey a msg or helped with the plot.

a)Found Mashiro near Aswad's village. Basically helped form an alliance between the two unlikely factions.

b)Helped Arika get over her Otome anxiety.

c)Helped Mashiro to gain the respect of her people and allies.

EP 21 sucked! They need more adrenaline pumping action!

Choux said...

Oh, I see... Yes, you're right. I feel slightly sorry for the Jabals though, being used like that to aid the plot. They always end up getting blown to bits (Well, almost) one way or another. :p

I feel the same way about Ep 21. It didn't suck to me, nevertheless, I don't find it very exciting. The Mikoto Vs Nina fight was too short! And human Mikoto didn't even stay on screen for more than a few seconds!!

I guess we don´t have so many dead people because they´re not planning a reset (and there I´m kind of thankful). But I don´t see great chance of survival for sergey right now. Come on someone has to be sacrified to the Gods of the Happy Ending.

We have 5 episodes to go .. this plot needs 10 more .. we need some kick@ss action from natsuki and nao .. and don´t forget about mai .. this can´t be done ..
what are these guys up to?!?

I just want a good ending, something that makes sense (and shiznat togetherforever of course ^^).

Otherwise .. sunrise maki maki .. sunrise maki maki maki .. sunrise maki maki maki maki .. maki maki maki maki maki ..

Choux said...

Perhaps that's what nearly all of us are wondering on right now. To reset? Or not to reset? Sunrise has been keeping us in the dark about this. I'm with you in thinking that they're most likely not planning on pulling a reset, although anything, just about anything, is possible in their hands. And we still do not what the Harmonium is capable of as well. Speaking of which, I'd put Sergay on the death row too, along with Chie and Tomoe. The first two are very likely to betray Schwarz since Sergay still seem to have his own agenda and Chie is clearly spying for Yukino. As for Tomoe, she may not stray too much from the enemies' goal but I can imagine her risking herself to accomplish tasks for Shizuru and that will get her into trouble.

The next ep looks to be promising, although I probably won't set my hopes too high yet. I just pray the remaining 5 episodes will come out strong in the end. It is quite noticeable that Sunrise has been gradually building the suspense in moving the plot forward. The only thing the eps lack now is action but I'm pretty sure they will grant us what we want in the subsequent episodes.

Yes, a good ending would be ideal. Even if they don't dish out a reset, I believe the series is capable of delivering a grand finale if the writers don't mess up. Right now, we'll just have to wait...

Sigh... Now that I think about it, I'm starting to miss the series. ^^;

Yeah, they sure know how to tease the fans, still (or even more) now with just 5 episodes to go. what is giving me an headache is that they are keeping on open up new storylines instead of waving their net together and I think that everyone is doubting now that they will succeed in putting the pieces of the puzzle together in a satisfing way without leaving so many questions yet to be answered (just like in hime).
Don´t get me wrong I loved the end of hime, I think it was the only possibility to cheer the fans up after so much drama.

The harmonium.. well .. who knows, it could the answer of all our questions or just the piano of bach´s grandmother..
I really don´t believe that they ´re going to reset.. the guys don´t like to repeat themselves.. and since otome is "similar but in a totally different way" to hime, we could guess that... THEY ARE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!!

No, probably the Harmonium is nothing else than a HUGE KARAOKE MACHINE and we will see them all together at the very end, Shizuru and Natsuki singing "My endless love", Akane and Kazu-kun "Mrs Robinson" and Sergey "..I´ll take to the candy shop.." to Arika and Nina..
Yeah, I feel it, this is how it is going to be!! *fireinmyeyes*

BTW, "Today was kind of fun"?!?
Already gone psycho again?!?

"They are keeping on open up new storylines instead of waving their net together and I think that everyone is doubting now that they will succeed in putting the pieces of the puzzle together in a satisfing way without leaving so many questions yet to be answered"
That's true, although I can see everything slowly coming together now. Sloooowly... I hope they can pull it off by the final ep. HiME did leave a lot of unanswered questions at the end but they didn't stick out too much and I was satisfied with how things turned out, even if it was cheesy.

Haha... I can imagine the ratings plunging if they slot in another reset. I can still tolerate it in HiME, but if they do repeat it, it just feels... Weird. I felt exactly that way in Episode 12 when Akira er... "Kissed" Takumi and called him an idiot. I was like "Haa... They repeated that scene from HiME Episode 20. Okay, that was weird..." It was so out of place.

The sole thing which can make me overlook a lame reset idea is if they make Shiz & Nat an official and canon couple by means of providing solid proof. Their relationship was still pretty much ambiguous by the end of HiME. Shizuru clearly loves Natsuki but their romantic feelings for each other was vaguely mutual. Seeing how things are in Otome, there are high hopes that they really do love each other mutually in the romantic aspect, only that they weren't very open about it, perhaps due to their work. Or maybe Sunrise didn't treat us to "behind-the-scenes" goodies. Hey! I want that as one of the Mai-Otome DVD Bonus Eps! MORE if possible! ^^

The Harmonium a karoke machine? LOL!! If Nagi starts singing enka-style, he would end up destroying the whole planet anyway :p. Ha, maybe Sunrise is gonna reveal the Harmonium's power to us in either the penultimate episode or the finale.

"BTW, "Today was kind of fun"?!? Already gone psycho again?!?"
Nah... Shizuru just wants to satisfy her horny desires. LOL kiddin'... We know she's using Tomoe and I doubt she had real fun. It could be an understatement related to the situation. Sigh... I kinda miss Shizuru being the instigator in all of this. A victim role doesn't suit her although of course, Tomoe is the real victim because Shizuru is manipulating her.

You're probably the same person who'd complain if Shizuru kissed Takumi.

IMHO, that would be equally hot.

Then again, who wouldn't fulfill their dream of doing naughty things to Shizuru (et al)?

Anonymous said...

Come on, no, Takumi and Shizuru? This would be just.. WRONG and unnecessary..

Choux said...

"You're probably the same person who'd complain if Shizuru kissed Takumi."
You're 99% correct. As for the 1%, I won't complain... I will rant like there's no tomorrow instead. ;p

Ahaha... I am very very Pro-Shiz&Nat after all, although I'm slowly growing accustomed to Shizuru & Tomoe. I was shocked at first but after while (or rather after watching that scene several times) I've begun to fully accept it. I even briefly thought it was a rather hawt moment. Or perhaps it could be that Shizuru is only actually using Tomoe. Ha, it's still a one-sided love.

On the other hand, I agree with philk on Shizuru and Takumi. That's plain wrong :p. I seriously can't imagine Shizuru going after boys, even though Takumi is a sissy (No offense to Takumi fans. I like him anyway). LOL

By the way, I sincerely apologize for my delayed review on Episode 21. I'm currently tied up with a huge group assignment and it's no fun when group work suddenly becomes solo work. Damn, programming sucks! X___X

Ep22 gives us answer and Ep33 slows the pace again, tabun.

Choux said...

Ep 33? Wow, I wish Sunrise would take it that far. LOL, yeah I know you meant Ep 23. :p

Next week's episode looks to be a non-action one, probably for explaining Mai's (and maybe Mikoto's) story. Gee... Nevertheless, I hope they would manage to slot in some action in there. We've been denied too much of that and it's already very close to the end.
